As you probably know, because you’re on my site, I love cars – reimagining them, taking pictures of them, talking about them and most of all driving them. So it’s about time I put more effort into driving like a boss. I’ve got my race license – I really should write about that too – I’m turning my MK1 MX5 into a hoon mobile and currently I’m learning precision driving.
I recently spent a day with European Pro Drifter Scotty, I only got about an hour to drive with him but it was enough to feel a spark and know that I was curious to find out more. So I booked a day at Prodrift Academy UK (the Birmingham Wheels location) where I was trained by Sarah Price in a MK2 MX5. I used to have one of these so it was great to start in a familiar car. In fact they’re a great car to hone your skills in general, because if you drive one properly it’ll try and kill you at any given opportunity. A twitchy backend hitting a patch of oil on a roundabout right next to a lorry – that’ll definitely learn you.
Anyway, back to it, so I went into the day thinking – let’s see if I’m any good at this and if I enjoy it, then maybe it’s a new direction to go in. As it turns out I’m not terrible and I had an absolute blast – I really loved it. I’ve done some track driving but precision driving, drifting, that’s what got me. Sarah at Prodrift was incredible, we had way too much fun and I managed to pass my Rookie graduation. Now I’m hooked!
My friend and incredible photographer Chris Frosin came along for the day and took some snaps of my Rookie drifting. He’s also coming back with me this Friday. I’ve got another day booked with Sarah at Prodrift and I can’t wait. It’s an escape and I love it, let’s hope I can keep getting better. This could get interesting…
