For the last few days I’ve had the pleasure of driving a Honda Civic Type R GT 2.0 VTEC Turbo MT. Those who read my reviews will know not to expect anything super technical or stuffy and today is no different. OK read on.
When you start the Type R it’s automatically in Sport Mode, obviously, then it’s down for Comfort (you’ll never use this) and up for +R – which let’s face it, is what we want. This car is fast, 0-62mph in 5.8 seconds, in fact the Type R is the fasted front wheel drive car ever around the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit. After 10 minutes I found myself yelling at no one in particular “I need to find a track!” it’s THAT good. The handling is bang on and the suspension (adjusted in the different drive modes) is ideal in +R. Surely this is the ultimate hot hatch (that’s rhetorical).
For an off-the-shelf car this is something special. Some folks on social media say the styling is too fussy – I completely disagree, it looks like a custom car, it doesn’t look like every other road car and personally that’s what I like. It’s different and as a car customiser I love different. People turn around and look at this car – in a sea of white SUVs this is a visual house party; it’s the antitode to EVs and soulless Hybrids. Someone said it looks fast standing still and someone else said it looks like something from Max Power. Everything an ASBO infused petrol head wants from a car. Everytime I parked this car I looked back at it, you know you’ve got the right wheels when you do that.
There are a few things I would change however – I don’t like 4 door cars, it really should be a 2 door. The back seats look and feel cheap but I’d rip them out anyway to fit a roll bar and a sub. I think it would look better lower too, but that’s about it – I mean I’d prefer rear wheel drive but it’s not the end of the world. This is a damn good version of what it is. In fact if you’re going to buy one of these and you drive like a hoon – which is exactly what this car induces – then you may as well just throw your licence at the nearest police officer. With the speed cameras and road restrictions in the country this car is wasted on our roads. Go find and airstrip and avoid the fun ruiners.
Finally, because I love listening to music when I drive (by the way this car has a good quality sound system as well) I’m going to start assigning cars a song to represent the drive, look and the feeling they evoke. So, I assign the Honda Civic Type R GT Bonkers by Dizzee Rascal. Because it is BONKERS. Don’t belive me? Drive one yourself, I dare you.
